FAQ's

How to ascertain which blend is suitable for your horse?

It is possible to just scan through the herbal descriptions, and make an informed guess. This will work up to a point. However, the most accurate way of deciding what your horse needs, is to email a photo through to Sara., who then gets Johnny, the herbalist to assess the picture of your horse. Through many years of experience, Johnny can accurately work out what blends your horse will need, and they can then be posted to you as soon as possible. From sending the photo, it is usually less than a week before you receive your herbs.

How do I know how much to feed?

Instructions will be on the tub, or Sara will have emailed you to advise amounts. But, a rule of thumb is, 1 scoop for a 500 kg horse. A scoop is approx a tablespoon.

Top...

How long will the herbs take to work?

This can be variable. Usually, the sicker the horse, the quicker you notice a change. They can work as quick as a few hours, a couple of days, or a couple of weeks. Each horse is different.

Top...

Could my horse get any reaction to the herbs?

Not usually. But occasionally a horse may get a worsening of a symptom, e.g. swelling, or extra nasal mucus. If this occurs, and you are at all worried, reduce or stop the herbs, and phone Sara for advice. It is usually never a problem, just the body’s way of expelling something bad, that it no longer needs.

Top...

How long will my horse need to be on the herbs?

This will depend on how long he has had the problem. It may also be that, he has one or two months on one type of blend, then he needs to go onto a different one, as the first one has done its job. It is very like peeling an onion. As one layer comes off, so another is revealed underneath.

Top...

Can the herbal blends be fed alongside other feeds or supplements?

Yes. They work in a homeopathic type of way – only very tiny amounts are needed in order for them to take effect. The herbs can be put in your horse’s normal ration.

Other ‘straight’ herbs can be fed alongside them. E.g. a handful of chamomile flowers, a spoon of garlic., or whatever you normally feed.

If he normally has no feed, the herbs can be added to a bit of carrot/apple, and half a handful of chaff, with a dribble of water to make them a bit pasty.

Top...

What happens if my horse won’t eat the herbs?

This is very rare! If a horse needs the blend, then he is usually very happy to eat it! Also, all the blends are fairly palatable, so normally the horse would eat more if allowed! If he isn’t very keen, try putting it in his favourite snack.

How will I know when I need to change my horse’s herbs?

After your horse has been on the herbs for a couple of months, it is always a good idea to submit another recent photo to Sara, who will do a reassessment with Johnny, and make sure that your horse needs to carry on with the same ones, or has a change, or doesn’t need them anymore.
