What is Equine Bowen Therapy?

Fab Rubbing

Equine Bowen Therapy allows the horse to perform his best for his rider. Likewise, by addressing any muscular stiffness or old injuries in the rider with the Bowen technique, the horse will appreciate a more balanced weight on his back! Any correction of a horse’s problem may not hold unless the rider is in complete structural balance.

Sara Mead is a registered Equine Bowen therapist, having qualified from the European School of Equine Bowen Therapy, approved by the European College of Bowen Studies, an Supported by Nigel Dodman, BVSc, Cert.Ed, MRCVS, Veterinary Surgeon and Bowen Therapist. See More...

Sara is also a fully qualified Human Bowen theratpist (Bowtech), a member of the Bowen Therapy Accadamy of Australia and the Bowen Association UK.

The best protection you can have is prevention

Best Bowen ever

All horses will benefit greatly from a Bowen Therapy treatment; like tuning musical instruments to play a sweeter tune – your horse will have more elevation in his stride, by freeing the shoulder up, and more power in his hindquarters.

My Ethics are of Truth and Honour.  My mission is to improve the life of any horses I treat, through bowen, possibly herbs and any other healing modality I feel may be relevant to your horse.  This will almost certainly include the sharing and pooling of my knowledge and useful contacts.  My aim is to try and implement as natural a lifestyle as possible for your horse, bearing in mind the perameters we face when keeping horses in this country and climate.

I will try to help you as an owner, with the result being that you will have a happier and more comfortable horse, in a cost effective way.

Equine Bowen Therapy (EBT) is based on the principles of the Bowen Technique,(Bowtech) pioneered by Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia.

EBT is a holistic non-invasive and effective hands-on technique which promotes healing, pain relief and energy re balancing. Like the Bowen technique for people, it addresses the whole central nervous system, helps to release muscle spasm, relieves congested kidneys, and stimulates the lymphatic system. It is subtle and relaxing for the horse.

How does is work?...

Using fingers and thumbs on precise points on the body, the practitioner applies a rolling action, which affects the muscles, ligaments and tendons.

During the treatment, there are two minute intervals, when the horse is left to rest, while the body absorbs and processes the gentle moves, allowing fine adjustments to take place.

There is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue. A treatment will take approximately one hour, and three or four treatments, usually at weekly intervals, may be required to achieve lasting relief.

Are there conditions which respond well to EBT?

EBT has a beneficial effect across many areas, in particular it has proven to be particularly effective in the treatment of:

  • Un levelness, disunited gait or irregular action
  • Uneven wear of shoes, dragging toes
  • Muscle atrophy or uneven development
  • Stiffness on one rein
  • ‘Cold’ or sore back
  • Sluggish lymphatic system or weakened immune system
  • Uncharacteristic change of temperament or deterioration in performance
  • If you already use a chiropractor for back problems, Equine bowen can help ‘fix’ the chiropractic treatment in the body, by softening the tight muscles and ligaments that can sometimes pull the vertebrae back out of alignment.
  • Recovery from a long standing illness or lameness, or disease.

Horses can injure their backs getting cast, pulling back when tied up, slipping on roads, and from poorly fitting rugs and saddles. Many older horses that have been retired due to stiffness have returned to gentle hacking following EBT.

All Equine Bowen therapists are qualified human Bowen therapists and as with many holistic therapies, the body is treated as a whole, without referral to named disease. See my qualifications for details.
